Sheets Two and Three Glued.

One and a bit sheets of ply to go then some more fairing.
Still need to find a skillsaw that will scarf 9mm ply. The depth of cut needs to be 72mm. A 210mm saw might get away with it.

A good days work. Two more sheets of 18mm ply glued.

First Sheet Glued

The aft sheet  is up and ready to resin the second sheet.
My block and tackle system worked fantastically. Didn't get a drop of resin on my gloves.

Scarfing 18mm ply

That worked out OK. All scarfs completed now for the bottom.

I have also rigged  a block and tackle system for lifting the resined sheets into place on the glued bottom planks. Don't have to handle the ply except for screwing it down.
I will now be able to lift the sheets from the floor then lower the ply over locating pegs in the timber bottom to place it in exactly the right place. I can now do this gluing on my own.

Getting Ready To Scarf The Bottom 18mm Ply

Photos tell the story best. The scarfs are 8:1. The first small one is my first ever practice scarf of three pieces of ply. Fitted together perfectly.

 Mmmmm...... So here goes.

Bottom roughed out.

I am thinking that the next task is to mark and scarf the 18mm ply, glue it onto the bottom then fare all.
Learning daily how to carry out the next step. Still have to figure how to scarf 18mm meranti. It will happen.

Tuesday 16 May 2017

Almost completed the bottom planks.

Had to extend the clamps a bit.
18mm Meranti ply to go on top next followed by more fairing. Currently not yet sure on the order here as to whether the ply overlaps or butts at the bottom chine.

A little Further On.

Seven planks glued and nailed (75 Bronze annular ring nails - made in NZ) Two and a very small bit to go then adding 18mm Meranti ply on top. Going well. There is a bit of weight up there. Block and tackle worked well.
Gary - do you have a few long sash clamps that I could borrow for a few days so I can finish the bottom. I need a few longer ones.

Three Bottom Planks Glued and Nailed

Three Bottom Planks Glued and Nailed.
I found some big butty bronze hold-fast ring nails Stanley Marine. Might help.

The First Bottom Plank Goes Up

Up she goes. It is a 12 metre plank. 145 x 45mm treated pine. Pretty heavy.
Progressing. Frame and stringer fairing is mostly finished. Working on the knuckle at the base of the stem also. Photos to come.
